Schools as 21st Century Global Learning Communities

AS WE MOVE toward a new millennium, the myriad of changes which are occurring at both local and global levels necessitate the transformation of schools and schooling. We work in partnership, as 'inside-outside' facilitators, with individuals, schools, districts and state/national systems over a period of 1-6 years to facilitate the process of renewal and growth so schools can become 21st Century Global Learning Communities.

A 21st Century Global Learning Community:

  • aligns and implements the most effective, best-researched and relevant teaching and learning techniques, philosophies and strategies to help students/adults construct meaning and to take responsibility for their own learning;

  • appropriately uses the latest technology to enhance student/adults' learning and networking;

  • involves students/adults in learning designed to respect cultures and environments throughout the world;

  • involves students/adults in developing both a local and global perspective;

  • focuses on facilitating learning that involves people of all ages and experiential backgrounds;

  • involves students/adults in community-based learning;

  • develops collegiality and sustained professional reflective practices for students and adults;

  • provides time for working together and supporting change;

  • develops partnerships for learning with parents, community and businesses;

  • utilises communication and decision-making procedures that allows for meaningful participation of all members of the learning community;

  • provides leadership opportunities and responsibilities for all members of the learning community to feel appropriately challenged and supported through their change/growth processes;
