The Duke of Edinburgh's Award has three levels, the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, each requiring different amounts of effort and commitment. Each level requires participation in one activity in each of the areas of physical recreation, expedition, skill and community service. Each activity requires an assessor to assess and record the participant's progress.

The participant may choose to undertake any activity relevant to that area and approved by the Award Office, and is responsible for setting their own goals. The minimum commitment for each activity is shown below, for each activity.
