Manufacturer: Furuta (confectionery) / Kaiyodo (Toy figure) Release Date: July 2000 Notes: The "red data" in this series title refers to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, a list of flora and fauna from around the world that are facing a high risk of global extinction. The Red List was compiled by the Secies Survival Commission (SSC) branch of the World Conservation Union (IUCN, also known as the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources), and lists species according to whether they are Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable. This series of animals and birds features 12 of the species on the Red List. The normal set consists of 10 fugires, and the last two (Giant Panda and Goliath Frog) are "mystery" or secret animals, in other words they were not publicised as part of the series lineup and were only discovered as part of the series once consumers had started buying and opening the boxes. Each figure came in assembled form, with a base that was separate from the actual figure. The boxes the figures came in had an explanation (in Japanese) of the Red List, and also included a small number of sweets. The figures also included an explanatory card with pictures of the animals, and a description of their habitat and status. These cards also included a token which could be cut out, and a full set of these tokens could be submitted to take part in a draw to win the special Dodo figure. In addition to the special Dodo figure that could be won in these draws, two other Dodo figures were available: one with a gold base that was only released duing the World Festival 2000, and another with a gold body and base that was only available for purchase directly from the "Hobby Lobby" collectble toy retail outlets throughout Japan.
