Walter Dewayne COUSE

Born  :   15th Aug 1910 at Loomis, Washington, United States of America S228  S869
Died  :    31st Jan 1997 at Republic, Washington S228  S869  S228
Bur'd  :    31st Jan 1997 at Mountain View Cemetery, Loomis, Okanogan, Washington, United States of America S869

Notes
The following history was related verbally to his son Bob (and thanks to Bob for sending it to me. -- Douglas):
Walter Dewayne( Dewayne) was born in Horse Spring Coulee August 15,1910 on the family homestead. His mother died in 1917 and Dewayne was raised by his father and his aunt Lily until she left for Seattle around 1923.
Dewayne and his father farmed the family homestead and milked 8-9 cows. Milk and cream were sold in Tonasket and were the major source of cash.
As a child Dewayne attended the Burbery school and walked to Loomis to take his 8th Grade tests. Dewayne did not attend school past the 8th grade as he had to take care of his father and the homestead. To augment their income, Dewayne stacked hay in Loomis and picked apples in Tonasket.
At 17 Dewayne purchased his first car from Al Symonds in Tonasket and was never without a vehicle from that day forward. His first car cost him $50.00 and was a model T Ford without fenders known as a " Bug". He earned the money to buy the car by fighting fire on Aeneas Mountain. His car had no spare tire and the frequent flats had to be patched in place.
Dewayne and his father used the " Bug" to haul milk and cream to Tonasket. Prior to that they used a buggy.
Dewayne and his father lived on the homestead until 1935 when they moved to Republic where Dewayne puchased at piece of property ( the Jake Rounds place up Swan Lake road) from the Land Bank. Dewayne and his uncle ( Dick Burbery) herded their cattle over from Tonasket on horseback a two day ride. Dewayne and his father lived there for about a year during which time Dewayne hauled wood for Old Man Anderson (Henry Hafer cut it) and worked for the city doing odd jobs. Unable to make ends meet, Dewayne had to let the place go back to the Land Bank.
Dewayne then ( 1936) moved to the Tom Davis place west of the Ritzschke place and continued to do odd jobs for the city. He also helped build the county courthouse which subsequently burned down.
In 1937, Dewayne met Mildred Marie Garris while working on road construction west of Republic. Two weeks before they were married on Nov 11,1938, Dewayne moved to another place at the turnoff to Swan Lake.
He then began working for Claude Trevitt assaying ore for the private mines in the area. He worked in an assay office below the Knob Hill which was owned by the Day Mining company. He worked there from 1937 until 1945. During this time Dewayne heated up a piece of high grade ore in a kiln until the gold beaded up on the surface. It was a conversation piece he was proud of all his life.
In 1945, Dewayne and his family bought a trailer and took a trip to Arizona to see about joining an acquaintance who was prospecting there. Along the way they stopped to visit Mildred's brother in California. One look at the Drywash prospecting business convinced Dewayne it was not for him. While in a trailer park in Arizona, Dewayne was offered a job in road construction as a mechanic at $1.50 per hour.
Dewayne was told he would not last long working with the Master Mechanic who had a reputation as being tough to get along with. It turned out that the Master Mechanic was one of the few supervisors Dewayne ever worked for that he truly respected. After a year, Dewayne received a raise to $2.00 per hour. During his tenure with Fisher Contractors he drove a grader 50 miles to Mc Nary Arizona, the first time he drove anything that big. He helped build the main roads around Yuma, Rulito, Phoenix and Welton. He also helped install the Phoenix sewer system.
In 1950 the family returned to Republic and built the family home on the Knob Hill Road out of material largely salvaged from the Old Red Mill south of town. He worked for Day Mines as an assayer for about six months and then worked for the Ferry County Road Department for 3-4 years. Dewayne then worked for the San Poil Lumber Company driving a " Strattle Bug" and forklift moving lumber to and from the drying kilns and to the rail loading docks.
Yielding to his desire to be his own boss, Dewayne started his own business. Among his many services he: Dewayne sold his sanitation businesses to his son, Cliff, in 1983 and retired. He and Mildred purchased a motor home which allowed them to spend winters in Arizona and California for several years and to travel across the US visiting friends and family. Dewayne like to travel and he and Mildred made one trip to England with his aunt and uncle to visit some of the relatives from his mother's side of the family. S228
