William Peyton BURBERY

William and Charlotte lived at Crofts Farm, Alveston, Warwickshire England where they farmed and raised cattle. William won many prizes at the fat stock shows.
During the 1880's William P and his brother George owned and operated a Turkish towel mill at Primrose Vale, Congleton where William lived at the time.
After William's wife passed away, her only sister Mary Grace came to keep house for William and help care for the family. ( When Lula and Dick Burbery and Dewayne and Mildred Couse visited England in 1972 they visited William's old home at Primrose Vale but the old mill had been torn down six years before. All the rooms in the old home had been remodeled except the living room which was still as it was originally.)
Several years after his wife Charlotte died, William left England and went to Canada in search of a place to start a new life for the family. While visiting a Mr. Richter, a well known rancher just across the line from the U.S.A, he was told about about the Okanogan Valley in Washington State and went there to visit. After searching around he finally bought Squatter's Rights from the first settlers in Horse Spring Coulee at the foot of Aeneas Mountain, 6 miles southeast of Loomis, Washington in 1894 at the age of 47. (The old Burbery home place was first owned by a Mr. Yunaman and a Mr. Krupp owned the property where the big spring is, the place known to the Burbery children as Uncle John's)
He returned to England to get the family and the housekeeper, Mary Grace, who he later married on December 29,1897. William became a farmer and stockman and again raised horses, cattle and sheep. Before the homesteaders came in, there was open range for the livestock and they would roam the hills on Cayuse Mountain and Whitestone Flats. As more settlers moved in and the land was fenced, more farming was done to raise hay to winter the stock at home.
William owned the first and only binder and he and and a neighbor, Henry Houttuin, owned the first threshing machine in the area. They used a steam engine for power and Bert Garret (Lula Burbery's brother) was hired to run the engine. He always went with it as it was moved over the country to thresh for the many farmers. The threshing machine or separator, as it was sometimes called, was pulled by horses. Four head or sometimes six head were needed. Raleigh Garrett (brother of Bert and Lula) quite often drove the horses as he was a good four horse teamster. The trap wagon as it was called was also pulled by horses and was used to haul the equipment, fork, tools, water jugs, bed rolls and whatever else was needed.
William Henry ran around 300 head of sheep and his son John chose to live at home and never married. He tended the sheep and took care of the garden.
In the early years the sacks of wool were hauled by wagon to the railroad depot at Riverside, Washington to be shipped away. It was a two day roundtrip.
It was a regular habit for William and his wife Mary Grace to go to Loomis in their Buckboard every Friday night to take mutton to their regular customers, do the shopping and get their mail. There was no mail route through the coulee until several years later. Mary Grace would visit and have lunch with a friend and William would stay at the Pool Hall, play cards, shoot pool and enjoy a lunch of cheese, crackers and beer. He was known to be a good pool player.
William did very litle visiting except on business but he enjoyed having company and playing cards. Solo was his favorite. S228  S235
