Notes from Paul Burbery's data: In 1834 James was living at NEWICK in Sussex, in an area known as Newick Rough, and married to a local girl. They had 4 children christened in the parish church, but by 1847 they had moved to MERSTHAM and had 2 more children, John & Elizabeth.
James was by occupation a Road Labourer and on the 29 March 1860 he died in the Union Workhouse at "Reigate Foreign" of Bronchitis and Chronic Exhaustion. Parish records give his age as 67, but the death certificate gives his age as 62.
In 1861 his widow was living in Military Lane, Reigate, with the 3 youngest children. Benjamin (a carpenter), John (a pot boy in a pub), and Elizabeth (9 years old)  S500
