Sailed his own ship out from England. He brought with him plants, bulbs and animals.
The family first stopped in Western Australia, but only stayed there for six months. They then came to Tasmania in 1831. John took up some land in 1834 at St. Leonards, about 12 miles out of Launceston. He called his property "Mt. Edgcumbe" after the ancestral home of his wife's family.
He prospered as an Innkeeper, and acquired several properties at Paterson's Plains, Bullocks Hunting Ground and Pipers River. S350

He became a wealthy landowner, through inheritance and his desire to purchase properties in both Cornwall and Devonshire. Two of the most valuable farms that he owned were named Leat and Collacott, which were located in Werrington, County Devon, England.
His Will, written 6th March 1777, stated that Leat and Collacott were to be given to his eldest son Oliver S844
