Helena GRIFFITHS née BURBERY(1839--1914)

On Monday the community was shocked by the sad report of the death of Grandma Griffiths shortly after the mid-day meal of which she had eaten heartily and was in apparent good health as she has been for some time. After dinner, the family went about their usual duties and Grandma laid down on the couch. In a short time Miss Larkin, who has been staying with the family entered the room and noticed the peculiar position in which Mrs. Griffiths lay. Upon close inspection, she discovered that life was extinct. It was only a short time then until the family was aware of the fact that Grandma had gone to her reward and that the neighborhood had lost a good friend. Mrs. Griffiths had lived the greater part of her life in our midst and as we have known her was a consistent Christian being an active member of the Presbyterian church of this place ... (rest of passage illegible) ...

Helena Burbery was married to John Griffiths January 12, 1865, the young couple going immediately to housekeeping at Monee, Illinois, where they lived until 1874, when they moved to Kansas locating on a farm near Seneca, March 6, 1874; moved to Centralia in spring of 1876, where they lived until the spring of 1881, locating on a farm four miles to the south of Baileyville, and came to Baileyville to make their home in the spring of 1889.
